Hi! My name is Henry, and I’m five and a half. I love playing outside. When it’s winter, I stomp in the snow and make forts with my big brother. When it’s spring, I jump in mud puddles and catch frogs. But do you know what I don’t love? When Mom says, “Take off your muddy shoes before you come inside!”
I don’t understand why it’s such a big deal. Mud is fun! But Mom and Dad do not think it’s fun when I leave footprints all over the floor. That’s why they made our mudroom super cool with all these special cubbies and hooks and places to put our messy stuff. Now, when winter is almost over and spring is coming, we get our mudroom ready for all the messy, awesome things we’re going to do.
A Place for My Snow Boots and Rain Boots
Right now, my big clunky snow boots are still in the mudroom because it’s kind of still winter. But soon, I’ll need my rain boots for puddle-jumping! Mom says our mudroom has special cubbies just for boots, and they have trays underneath so the water doesn’t make a big mess. Dad says that’s called “being organized.” I just like that I always know where to find my boots when I’m ready to run outside.
Hooks Are Like Magic for My Jacket and Backpack
Every day after school, Mom says, “Hang up your coat!” And I say, “I forgot!” But really, I just didn’t want to do it. But guess what? My mudroom has hooks that are JUST my size! I don’t have to stretch way up high to reach them. My coat, backpack, and even my superhero cape all have a place now. Mom says this means I’m being responsible. I think it just means I won’t lose my favorite hoodie again.
A Special Spot for My Muddy Pants
Sometimes, when I come inside, I am so muddy that Mom makes me stop right in the mudroom. She says, “Take those pants off before you go any further!” Then she puts them in a special bin, so they don’t get mud on my little sister’s toys or the couch or, you know, everything. Our mudroom has pull-out laundry bins built into the cabinets, so we can just drop our messy clothes right inside. Mom says this is genius. I say it means I get to keep playing for longer.
A Bench That’s Just Right for Sitting
Have you ever tried to take off muddy boots while standing up? It’s really, really hard. I always end up falling over. But now, we have a bench in the mudroom, and I can sit down while I pull off my shoes. Plus, sometimes my dog Murphy sits next to me and waits for Mom to wipe his paws. He gets muddy, too, but he does not have to take off his shoes because he doesn’t wear any.
Where Does All the Stuff Go?
When winter goes away, we don’t need our big fluffy hats and gloves anymore, but we still need them for next year. That’s why our mudroom has secret storage inside the cabinets. Mom and Dad put all our winter stuff away in baskets, and then we put out our baseball mitts and bike helmets instead. My big brother says that’s called “seasonal storage.” I say it’s like a magic trick where we make stuff disappear until we need it again.
Mudroom = More Playtime
I asked Mom why we have such a nice mudroom, and she said, “Because now I don’t have to clean up after you as much!” She thinks a mudroom helps keep our house clean, but I think it helps me go outside faster because I don’t have to spend forever finding my shoes or jacket.
Mom and Dad got all the cool stuff in our mudroom from Serenity Custom Woodworking. They made the shelves, the cubbies, and even the secret storage places. I think they must really like mud, too, because they made it so easy for me to keep playing in it.
If you like playing outside but don’t like getting in trouble for making a mess, tell your parents they need a mudroom with special cubbies and hooks and bins. Then, maybe they’ll let you play in the mud as much as you want!
